MIAMI LAKES, FL — A 19-year-old man was killed and a 15-year-old girl was listed in critical condition following a New Year's Day crash that left a Dodge Neon submerged in a lake.

Two other 18-year-old men escaped the early morning crash without injury in the 7200 block of Jacaranda Lane, according to Detective Lee Cowart of the Miami-Dade Police Department. Cowart could not confirm a report that Christopher Jamie died trying to save the 15-year-old.

The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. "The vehicle was traveling south on Jacaranda Lane when it drove into a lake," said Cowart. "The driver, Jonathan Perez, and passenger, Kevin Placeres, were able to exit the vehicle without injuries. The remaining two passengers were extracted from the submerged vehicle by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and transported to Palmetto General Hospital."
