📰 News we're reading

1. South Florida families cut the ribbon on new homes as part of affordable housing program (wsvn.com) — New first-time homebuyers in Miami’s Buena Vista neighborhood just received keys to affordable houses built on once-vacant lots, with Commissioner Christine King on hand to celebrate. The homes are part of Miami’s First-Time Homebuyer Program, which has already completed six houses and has 16 more in development, helping longtime residents like a county employee and a formerly homeless mother build stability and generational wealth.

2. Miami mayor set to give city manager a big raise from his Miami-Dade County job (miamiherald.com) — Miami’s new mayor plans to bring county public safety chief James Reyes in as city manager with a $475,000 salary, a big raise from his Miami-Dade job and among the highest for local administrators. City commissioners must still approve his appointment and compensation package, which includes a city car and generous pension contributions, potentially shaping how key Miami services are managed.

3. Judge sets late January trial date for Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick, co-defendants (sun-sentinel.com) — A Miami-based federal judge has scheduled U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick’s trial in his downtown Miami courtroom for a two-week period starting January 26, 2026, over alleged misuse of relief funds. The congresswoman is still finalizing legal representation, and her arraignment was recently delayed to give her more time to secure the attorney of her choice.

4. Volunteers help Miami's unhoused prepare for cold snap (cbsnews.com) — As a rare cold snap hits South Florida, volunteers are gathering under the I-95 overpass in downtown Miami to serve hot drinks, food, and warm gear to unhoused neighbors. Hope for the Homeless and St. Agatha Catholic Church coordinate weekly outreach, offering both supplies and emotional support to people living on Miami’s streets.
