Here are the top stories in Miami today:
1. Kenneth Jessell has been named the sixth president for Florida International University (FIU) in Miami. Jessell served previously as the university's chief financial officer and senior vice president for finance and administration. He was appointed interim president this past January. (CBS Miami)
2. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is calling for changes to Florida's death penalty law after the jury decision in the penalty phase of the trial for Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz. The jury did not recommend the death penalty. DeSantis called the jury's decision a "miscarriage of justice." (WPLG Local 10)
3. Miami-based Fortune International Realty is now affiliated with Christie's International Real Estate, a global luxury brokerage. The Miami-based company will now be called "Fortune Christineβs International Real Estate," although ownership will remain unchanged. (Subscription: South Florida Business Journal)
4. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) recently responded to calls at Delray Beach about a gator sighting. FWC said that it's rare for alligators to harm humans. People with concerns about an alligator can call FWC's toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286). (Miami Patch)
5. Miami Shores Village held its first Pride parade this past Sunday. The celebration of the LGBTQ+ community was attended by dozens of people. "Miami Shores has the second largest LGBTQ population per capita in the state of Florida," Miami Shores Councilwoman Crystal Wagner said during the celebration. (NBC Miami)
