Remy had been released from the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center earlier that day in connection with a domestic-related homicide charge. He was released under Florida's Stand Your Ground Law.

The law holds that a person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity, and who is attacked in a place where he or she has a right to stand his or her ground, can meet force with force.

That includes deadly force if the person reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm or in the case of preventing a forcible felony.

"Remy was discovered lying face down on the roadway of NW 7 Avenue," North Miami police explained.
