Here are the top stories today in Miami:
1. Several schools in South Florida made the list in the top public and private schools in America compiled by Niche. On the list are several School for Advanced Studies campuses in Miami-Dade, Mast Academy, Coral Reef Senior High School, and others. (Florida Patch)
2. South Florida non-profits are hard at work attempting to help the victims of Hurricane Ian across the state. The President of Global Empowerment Mission shared, "This is a really big deal, this is gonna be like the Katrina of Florida, unfortunately." The death toll rose to 73 people as of Saturday afternoon. (CBS Miami, NBC Miami)
3. The Pembroke Park Police Department officially became active on Friday after weeks of controversy about whether the town would have a police force after cutting ties with the Broward Sheriff's Office. A ceremony was held at the city town hall on Wednesday to swear in the 11 officers that will start the police force. (WPLG Local 10)
4. The NFLPA has terminated the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant involved in the handling of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's concussion review during last Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills, according to a report from CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. The group said they allegedly found "several mistakes" in the review. (CBS Sports)
5. Brightline passed 100,000 passengers in August 2022 as the transit company inches closer to connecting Orlando and Miami via high speed rail. The new number represents a 35 percent jump from August 2019. (The Next Miami)
