Pilot Killed When Small Plane Crashes Behind Boynton Beach Home

The pilot of a small plane was killed when the aircraft crashed in a gated South Florida community, according to police.

BOYNTON BEACH, FL — The pilot of a small plane was killed Friday when the aircraft crashed into a gated South Florida community.

"I can confirm we have responded to a plane that has crashed behind a home in the Dos Lagos community," Stephanie Slater of the Boynton Beach Police Department told reporters.

Helicopter news video showed wreckage of the yellow plane near a family swimming pool in what appeared to be the home's backyard.

A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft crashed around 1:15 p.m. after departing Lantana Airport, which is north of Boynton Beach.

"A Grumman American AA-5 with only the pilot aboard collided with the tree in the backyard of a residence," the FAA spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said the agency arrived at the scene shortly after the crash to begin its investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause of the accident.
