Here are the top five stories in Miami today:

1. A Miami man was arrested Sunday and accused of setting his own apartment unit on fire. Charles Morrell, 46, is facing charges of arson, criminal mischief and resisting an officer without violence. (WPLG Local 10)

2. The father of a Parkland school shooting victim, Manuel Oliver, interrupted U.S. President Joe Biden on the White House lawn Monday during a celebration for a new bipartisan law aimed at reducing gun violence. Oliver says the law does not go far enough and a representative said Oliver never thought the event should be a celebration and that it would allow Republicans to claim they had taken action to address gun violence and avoid additional change. 3. Miami-Dade and Broward Counties are facing a shortage of teachers for the upcoming school year. Broward County itself has 502 openings and is seeking teachers, teaching assistants, substitute teachers and other employees. (CBS Miami)

5. Chief Harvette Smith is North Miami Beach Police Department's first Black chief. Chief Harvette Smith served as interim chief since March and has been with the force for 32 years. (CBS Miami)

  • North Lauderdale City Commission suspended its customary invocation, as a South Florida free speech activist requested equal time to say, "Hail Satan." The activist is aiming to remove religion from all government proceedings with his group "Satan or Silence." (Florida Politics)
  • Body camera footage has captured Pompano Beach elected official Beverly Perkins cursing at a Fort Lauderdale Police officer after allegedly being caught speeding. The incident is expected to come up at the next commission meeting. (WSVN)
