Here are the top five stories in Miami today:

1. The three school staffers named in the grand jury report on school safety in Broward County Public Schools are Assistant Chief Building Official Ron Morgan, Director of Diversity and School Climate David Watkins, and Chief of Staff Jeff Moquin. Broward Superintendent Vickie Cartwright is being pressured to dismiss the officials by the state. The report analyzes school safety after the Parkland mass shooting and has been criticized by opponents as "political retribution" by the state. (NBC Miami, WPLG Local 10)

2. Fire units responded to the parking lot outside of Hard Rock Stadium after multiple vehicles caught on fire Sunday afternoon. Smoke could be seen from inside the stadium during the first half of the Miami Dolphins season opening football game against the New England Patriots. Authorities say it was an accidental fire. 3. The University of Miami cancer research center is proposing a new building consisting of medical office uses with a total floor area of 240,150 square feet. The new facility will focus on total-body wellness during cancer treatment to improve quality of life. (Miami Today)

4. A South Florida native, 42-year-old Jon Koleski, has been identified as one of two sheriff's deputies killed in a shootout in an Atlanta suburb Thursday night. Koleski graduated from Western High School in Davie in 1998 and his mother lives in Sunrise. (WPLG Local 10)

5. Investors spent $5 billion on South Florida multifamily properties in the first half of the year, representing the second-highest total on record, according to a Cushman & Wakefield report. The record investment is happening despite rising interest rates and slowing demand, as rents continued to rise. (The Real Deal - Miami)

  • Community Arts and Culture (CAC) is celebrating its 20th anniversary at The Doral Yard on Saturday, September 24. All ages are welcome to a free concert at 8455 NW 53rd St Suite 106, Doral. CAC is also launching a membership fundraising campaign to celebrate and commemorate their legacy of providing culturally rich programming and education to our global community.   • A local community is shaken and demanding answers over the death of 89-year-old Elizabeth Level or "Ms. Liz" in Liberty City as more details are released. City of Miami police say the victim was gunned down in a drive-by shooting while sitting out on her porch. (WSVN)
