Here are the top five stories today in Miami:
1. Leaders in South Floridaβs Venezuelan-American community gathered in Doral on Thursday to decry Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' decision to send two planes filled with migrants to Massachusetts. They accused DeSantis of not supporting those fleeing the dictatorial Venezuelan regime of Nicolas Maduro, while regularly attacking the regime. (WPLG Local 10, Florida Patch)
2. The Broward School Board has approved a settlement from its insurance company for $21.6 million for last year's partial roof collapse at James S. Rickards Middle. The settlement is slightly lower than the districtβs original claim of around $23 million, which included teacher and student personal items, site preparation and restoration and costs during incurred new construction. (Sun Sentinel)
3. One person is in the hospital after an apartment went up in smoke in South Florida. The fire ignited on Northeast 188th Street on Thursday. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. (WSVN)
4. Miami city commissioners delayed a final vote this week on Brickell City Centre's latest expansion due to a fire station not being built after a motion by Commissioner Joe Carollo. The blame seems to rest on Miami itself. The developer, Swire, said construction of a temporary fire station would take three to four months from the time the permit is received if approved. (Miami Today)
5. A developer working on several Biscayne Boulevard properties where a supertall tower is possible has requested Rapid Transit zoning designation, according to a county memo. Properties requested include New World Tower on Biscayne Boulevard and adjacent Yve Hotel. (The Next Miami)
