Controlled Burn Planned at Starkey Preserve
The Southwest Florida Water Management District is setting controlled fires at the New Port Richey area park.

Controlled, proscribed burns are being conducted at Starkey Wilderness Preserve throughout this month, according to the Southwest Florida Water Management District.
The district will be burning about 300 acres of land in small, manageable units as part of routine maintenance, according to a media release.
Controlled burns are part of the routine cycle the district uses to manage lands. The effort’s pupose is to avoid uncontrollable wild fires and maintain the environment.

The district is going to try to keep smoke from interfering with homeowners or drivers, but drivers are still encouraged to exercise caution in case smoke should mar their vision.
