Disabled Man Reunited With Lost Dog

The ownership of the New Port Richey dog remains in question; State Attorney Bernie McCabe will decide.

NEW PORT RICHEY, FL – It was a tail-wagging reunion when Petey the pit bull was returned to John Wynn. However, Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney Bernie McCabe still has to decide who the rightful owner of the dog is.

Wynn reported he had been walking his dogs Diablo and Petey, the white-and-brown pit bull, on Monday, June 26. While he was at the intersection of Jenner Avenue and Seven Springs, a car pulled up to him and an unknown woman told Wynn the dog was hers, took Petey and drove away.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office reported at the time of the dog’s disappearance, Wynn, who is mentally disabled, had proof of ownership.

By the next evening, sheriff’s deputies located the dog at a Pasco County residence. The sheriff’s office reported detectives working on the case were able to track down Petey with the assistance of their Intelligence Lead Policing Unit and social media.

The alleged suspect cooperated and willingly gave over the dog, but insisted to the deputies it was her dog. Patch is not publishing the name of the woman involved because she has not been formally charged with a crime in the matter.
