Palm Harbor Social Media Manager Heading to SXSW

Ashley Mooney, who works for Palm Harbor's Organic Salon Systems, will be taking the Startup Bus to Austin where passengers on the bus will create a startup in 72 hours.

According to local social media manager Ashley Mooney, the key to being successful in social media is to immerse yourself in it.

Live it, breathe it and be fearless.

“The best way to fully understand social media is to really immerse yourself in it,” Mooney said. “Even if you hear of new social network, sign up make an account. Learn about all the new technologies coming out. You definitely need to be in all the platforms and probably then some.”

Mooney, who is the social media manager for Organic Salon Systems in Palm Harbor, is planning on practicing those traits as she and other Tampa Bay area tech enthusiasts travel to South by Southwest (SXSW) on the StartupBus.

SXSW is a festival in Austin, Texas from March 8-17 that focuses on music, film and emerging technologies.

On the StartupBus, passengers traveling to SXSW will have 72 hours to "conceive, build and launch a startup."

“StartupBus is an invitation-only community of hackers (coders), hustlers (marketeers) and hipsters (designers) passionate about startups. We are best known for our annual competition where we bring new people into our community, building and selling a product on a bus that’s traveling 60 miles an hour towards Austin, Paris, or other major cities around the globe.”

“StartupBus is going to be amazing and challenging at the same time,” Mooney said. “I’m excited to put myself outside of my comfort zone.”

On the bus, Mooney said she has some ideas about what she is going to propose for the startup but is really excited to learn from other participants. Off the bus in Austin, Mooney hopes to learn about emerging technology at SXSW.

"There will be a lot of good people there with a lot of great things to say," Mooney said. "I definitely hope to gain some experience and knowledge during the networking. I hear Austin is a place where all anyone wants to do is help you. A lot of people are going to be there for all over the world."

Making her first trip to SXSW is something Mooney, a Clearwater native, would have had trouble predicting just a year ago as a Florida State graduate with a degree in economics and Asian business studies.

Following graduation she began doing consulting work for an ad agency with a focus on social media. She loved it.

Shortly after graduation, she became the social media manager for Organic Salon Systems.

At Organic Salon Systems Mooney manages several social media accounts, including its Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest pages.

“I manage all of their social media pages across all platforms," she told Patch. "I help devise new strategies to increase our ROI and build our community.”
