Pensacola may reconsider controversial Baptist Hospital advisor (pnj.com) — Pensacola leaders are weighing whether to revive a consulting contract with Bayou District Consulting to guide redevelopment of the old Baptist Hospital campus on the city’s west side. After intense public opposition over gentrification and displacement concerns, several council members now say they’re open to reconsidering the deal, but only if Councilman Delarian Wiggins supports bringing it back.

2. Downtown Pensacola readies for 'New Palafox' construction, set to start Jan. 5 (weartv.com) — Downtown Palafox Street is about to close to cars for “New Palafox” construction starting early Monday, Jan. 5, so all vehicles must be moved by 8 p.m. Jan. 4 and sidewalk furniture by Jan. 2. Local shop managers expect short-term headaches but are urging residents to keep supporting downtown businesses while the Garden-to-Main phase runs through May and full completion is targeted for November.

3. Unattended fire causes Escambia County home blaze (wkrg.com) — A Christmas Eve house fire in Escambia County has added an eighth red bulb to the “Keep the Wreath Green” safety campaign, which includes wreaths at Pensacola City Hall, Cordova Mall, and other local sites. Fire officials say an unattended recreational fire sparked the blaze and are urging residents in Pensacola and across the county to practice heating safety and request free smoke alarms if needed.

Major US Weather Records Broken This Year (newsweek.com) — Pensacola made national weather news this year by shattering its two-day snowfall record with 8.9 inches and setting a new record-low temperature of 13 degrees during January’s Gulf Coast snowstorm and cold snap.
