4 Teens Arrested After Weapons, Drugs Found

Sarasota County Sheriff's Office seized two handguns, marijuana and rock cocaine during a traffic stop.

The has arrested four Sarasota teenagers after finding weapons and drugs during a traffic stop late Monday night.

Deputies stopped a purple Ford Ranger near 17th Street and North Washington Boulevard around 11:50 p.m. for failure to stay in a  single lane, and noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Upon a consented search, deputies found two handguns and a baggy containing rock cocaine inside the vehicle, and a subsequent search of the driver, Sean Smart, located a bag of marijuana in his pant leg.

Deputies charged:

• Smart, 18, of 1075 Lewis Ave. with possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana.

• Marques Redding, 18, of 2653 22nd St., with possession of marijuana; 

• Xavadi Johnson, 20, of 2301 Powell Circle, with possession of a concealed weapon; and

• Khalin Bryant, 16, 2333 Powell Circle, with possession of a concealed weapon.

During the search, deputies said Bryant didn't have ID on him and gave him the name of "James C. Brown" with the birth date Feb. 17, 1994, which would make him 17, according to the probable cause affidavit. That earned Bryant an additional charge with providing false reports to law enforcement during an investigation, according to the affidavit.

The deputies found the hand gun in a car jack/tire iron compartment, according to the affidavit.

All suspects were booked at the north jail on various bonds except Bryant, who is being held without bond, according to the affidavit.

Johnson is on a $2,000 bond, Redding on a $1,000 bond and Smart on a $1,120 bond.
