Awake The State SRQ to Stage Downtown Rally

Awake the State will hold a downtown Sarasota rally and press conference to "send a message from Main Street to legislators and Gov. Rick Scott."

The 2012 Florida legislative session will kick off with a display of free speech Tuesday on Sarasota's Main Street.

Awake The State SRQ will host a really and press conference called "Message from Main Street'" where politically involved residents will send a message to state lawmakers and Gov. Rick Scott that they will "not tolerate more legislation that is unfair to the majority of Sarasota County residents," the group stated in a press release.

The rally will take place at 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at 1741 Main St., in front of the building.

Specifically, speakers will talk about voter suppression legislation and fair redistricting, the release states.

Awake The State describes itself as an "organic, grassroots movement of everyday Floridians."

This is the same rally where in March author Stephen King declared

These are the group's positions:

•reject devastating budget cuts;

• stop the assault on middle class families;

• halt the devastation to our environment;

• stop the assault on women and the disadvantaged;

• repeal voter suppression legialation; and

• "many other issues affecting everyday Floridians."  

The movement in Florida has also created a hashtag on Twitter to get involve in the conversation — #AwakeFL.
