FL Coronavirus Update: 36 Counties Report Deaths; 2,402 New Cases

Florida health officials reported new coronavirus deaths in 36 counties Wednesday and another 2,402 cases of the virus.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials reported new coronavirus deaths in 36 counties Wednesday and another 2,402 cases of the virus over the previous 24-hour period.

Florida counties reported 128 new deaths (health officials reported 127) as health officials reported Florida's 21st day of daily positivity under 10 percent. Officials reported a new statewide positive case total of 633,442 new cases, up from 631,040.

The daily positivity rate is calculated by taking the number of people who test PCR-or antigen-positive for the first time divided by all the people tested that day, excluding people who have previously tested positive.

Florida's overall positivity rate was at 13.48 percent Wednesday based on 4,700,822 total tests.

Wednesday's death total compares to 187 new deaths Tuesday, 68 new deaths Monday, 14 new deaths Sunday, 148 new deaths Saturday, 94 new deaths Friday (state health officials reported 89), 135 new deaths Thursday, 156 new deaths Wednesday (health officials reported 153) and 183 new deaths last Tuesday.

  • Brevard County reported eight new deaths.
  • Polk County reported eight new deaths.

  • Lee County reported five new deaths.
  • Marion County reported five new deaths.
  • Okeechobee County reported four new deaths.
  • Hillsborough County reported three new deaths.
  • Bay County reported three new deaths.
  • Collier County reported three new deaths.
  • Duval County reported three new deaths.
  • Hernando County reported three new deaths.
  • Indian River County reported three new deaths.
  • Lake County reported three new deaths.
  • Manatee County reported three new deaths.

The state reported 39,158 hospitalizations up from 38,859 hospitalizations a day earlier. That represents an increase of 299 new hospitalizations over the previous day.

State health officials also reported a total of 3,549 current hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, down from 3,624 current hospitalizations a day earlier.

Miami-Dade, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, reported 159,400 cases of the virus as of Wednesday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 72,371 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes Palm Beach, West Palm and Boca Raton, reported 42,518 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 37,668 cases of the virus while Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported cases of the virus.
