Florida's Coronavirus Death Toll Surpasses 9,000
Florida reached another milestone Friday as the state's death toll from the coronavirus surpassed the 9,000 mark.
TALLAHASSEE, FL — Buoyed by this week's single-day record of reported deaths, Florida reached another milestone Friday as the state's resident death toll from the coronavirus surpassed the 9,000 mark.
Florida's death toll climbed to 9,141 Friday from 8,913 a day earlier, which represents an increase of 228 newly reported deaths among Floridians. The latest one-day record of 276 reported deaths was set on Tuesday.
Health officials reported another 134 deaths involving non-Florida residents who died in Florida.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Florida rose by 6,148 Friday as the total number of coronavirus cases in the state reached 563,285, up from 557,137 cases a day earlier.

Thirty-seven of Florida's 67 counties reported new deaths Friday. That compares with 148 new deaths reported Thursday, 226 new deaths Wednesday (state health officials reported 212), 276 new deaths reported Tuesday, 91 new deaths Monday, 83 new deaths Sunday (state health officials reported 77), 182 new deaths Saturday and 180 new deaths reported last Friday.

- Hillsborough County reported 31 new deaths.
- Polk County reported 10 new deaths.

- St. Lucie County reported seven new deaths.
- Sarasota County reported seven new deaths.
- Escambia County reported six new deaths.
- Brevard County reported five new deaths.
- Orange County reported five new deaths.
- Pinellas County reported five new deaths.
- Seminole County reported five new deaths.
- Indian River County reported four new deaths.
- Lake County reported four new deaths.
- Pasco County reported four new deaths.
- Collier County reported three new deaths.
- Columbia County reported three new deaths.
- Hernando County reported three new deaths.
- Marion County reported three new deaths.
- Lee County reported three new deaths.

Florida reported a statewide positive test rate of 13.52 percent based on 4,128,584 tests as of Friday, which represents a one-day increase of 38,497 more tests over the previous day.
The state reported 33,155 total hospitalizations, up from 32,537 hospitalizations a day earlier. That represents an increase of 618 new hospitalizations over the previous day, which is among the highest one-day increases since the pandemic began.

Miami-Dade, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, reported 142,662 cases of the virus as of Friday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 65,369 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes Palm Beach, West Palm and Boca Raton, reported 38,575 cases.
Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 33,694 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 32,861 cases.
