Missed Call: VIACOM
Paul Marville looked surprised at the caller ID on the phone at Michael Urban Hair Studio and Gallery. He had to call back.
“Hi, this is Jeff from MTV,” the Sarasota resident and salon employee heard.

“I about fell off the chair,” Marville said.
The Rosemary District salon will appear on Saturday’s episode of MTV’s “Made” where ordinary teens try to be made into who they always wanted to be. The episode will air at 4 p.m.

The salon gave Pine View High School student and Sarasota resident Arjun Byju a makeover for the Mr. Pine View talent show at the school. The school, located in Osprey, is for talented and gifted students from all over Sarasota County.
Byju cannot speak to the media before the episode airs, MTV officials told Patch, but MTV has a sneak peak of Arjun's "Made" episode online.
“I’m excited for it to air,” salon owner Michael Krempel told Patch while cutting the hair of Kelly Taylor of Sarasota.
MTV filmed three months ago and and for about three hours on a Saturday at the salon.
“They filmed all of it from the moment he was here to the moment he walked out the door,” the Sarasota resident said.
Of course, there’s some MTV magic that goes into filming these “reality shows.”
Krempel said he had to call and rebook all his appointments that day, but his clients were excited and understood.
“They’re all excited to see it air, so set your DVR,” he said. He plans having a viewing party at his salon while it airs.
So to make the salon look full, “We brought in all my hot girlfriends fill up the chairs acting like they were guests here and had my assistants look like they were working on them.”
Arjun came to the salon as a surprise, and before Arjun's arrival, Krempel said producers had to hype the salon owner up to pull out a confident personality from Arjun.
“They wanted him to have some swagger,” Krempel said, adding that Arjun is a reserved kid.
Krempel was somewhat nervous about the start-and-stop of TV production and how it might actually affect him completing the makeover, but it turned out to be fine.
“I felt like I’m Ok, I’m doing what I do,” he said.
Arjun aspired to be a hip-hop star, and rapper Jay Sean even surprised him during lunch at the school for motivation. Arjun was inspired by Jay Sean because they are both of Indian descent, Krempel explained.
Krempel isn’t sure if his salon will be on for a blip or a few minutes, but he still can’t believe the production crew chose his salon.
“Little me in Sarasota with my little boutique salon?”
