Motorcyclist in Critical Condition After Crash

A Sarasota motorcyclist tried to avoid a car that stopped for another accident, but wound up hitting that car and is now receiving care at Blake Medical Center.

A Sunday evening crash on South Tuttle Avenue left a Sarasota man in critical condition at Blake Medical Center in Bradenton.

Florida Highway Patrol says Terry L Johnston, 53, is in critical condition after he attempted to swerve left on his 1976 Harley-Davidson motorcycle a sports utility vehicle suddenly stopped to avoid a previous crash at Tuttle and Sunnyside Street. 

The motorcycle struck the SUV, a Mitsubishi Outlander, in the rear, rotating the motorcycle onto its right side, then the Outlander went into northbound traffic and struck the right side of a 1979 Pontiac Bonneville, according to Highway Patrol.

The driver of the Outlander, Tina Hawkins, 34, and the passenger James Hawkins, 28, both of Sarasota did not sustain any injuries, Highway Patrol said, and the driver of the Bonneville, Gregory Meadows, 22, and passenger Ashley Shaver, 21, both of Sarasota were uninjured as well. 

The crash that the Outlander was trying to avoid was a vehicle striking a pedestrian, who was lying in the northbound lane of Tuttle Avenue, Highway Patrol said.

No details are available about that crash are available, as well as the condition of the pedestrian.
