New FL Scam Targets Domestic Violence Victims

Scammers posing as Sarasota County deputies are targeting domestic violence victims, the sheriff's office said.

SARASOTA, FL — A new scam is targeting domestic violence victims, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office warned in a social media post.

“We’ve warned you about scams repeatedly, but this one is particularly cruel,” the agency wrote.

Scammers are posting as SCSO deputies and contacting domestic violence victims “with false promises of keeping their loved ones out of jail in exchange for money,” according to the sheriff’s office.

The pressure tactics and false promises made are similar to previous scams, investigators added.

In one case, a victim was told to wire money via a Walgreens barcode, but an alert clerk was able to intervene and stop the scam.

In another situation, a victim was tricked into wiring money online, believing their spouse would avoid jail, SCSO said.
