Sarasota Seeks Names For 3 Preserve Sites
County representatives will show off the preserves at a public meeting on July 13.

SARASOTA, FL – From Myakkahatchee Creek Park to the Urfer Family Park, Sarasota County’s nature preserves and parks honor the area’s natural landscapes and the people who helped preserve them for future generations.
Now, Sarasota County is looking for help to give three new preserves names that will go down in history.
County representatives have invited the public to submit names for environmental lands in East County, including the Churchill Rang, Jordyn Holdings and Carlton Ranch sites.

The three sites are adjacent to the T. Mabry Carlton Jr. Memorial Reserve and were purchased through the Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program. Combined, the sites protect 5,665 acres of native habitat.
County staff will share maps, aerials, habitat types, sighted wildlife and plant species and history for the sites on Thursday, July 13 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Sarasota County Administration Building, 1660 Ringling Blvd. Staff will also accept name suggestions from the public at this meeting.

According to Section 2-2 of the Sarasota County Code, the preserves will be named for one or more of the following:
- Geographic location: Clearly located or associated with a distinct portion of the county
- Historical value: Specific historical value or significance to the county
- Individual or group: Must fulfill at least one of the following:
- A well-known, elected, appointed or volunteer community leader
- An individual or group who has positively influenced a large populace of the county through a significant contribution of money, time or material
- An individual or group who had a major involvement in the acquisition of development of the facility
- An individual or group whose civic leadership contributed to the betterment of the community
