‘Stuff the Charger’ Nets 39 Tons of Food

The Florida Highway Patrol's third annual toy drive will provide an estimated 65,000 means for people across the state.

TALLAHASEE, FL — The Florida Highway Patrol’s third annual Stuff the Charger drive to benefit needy families netted more than 39 tons of food from donors across the state. The drive, which kicked off in November, is expected to provide food banks throughout the Sunshine State with the makings of some 65,000 meals.

“The ‘Stuff the Charger’ food drive was extremely successful,” said Terry L. Rhodes, executive director of the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The drive’s results show the generosity of department members and Florida communities alike, Rhodes added. “It is my sincere hope that this year’s donations will allow families to focus on enjoying the holidays rather than worrying about whether or not they will be able to have a holiday meal.”

Food collected during the drive, which challenges residents to stuff FHP Chargers to the brim with nonperishable items, will be distributed through food banks. In the Tampa Bay area and surrounding counties, the banks that received the donations are as follows:

“The donations received will have a positive impact on many families in need,” said Col. Gene L. Spaulding, FHP’s director. “Making a difference in the lives of others, especially during the holiday season, is a reflection of FHP’s commitment to service.”

FHP’s F Troop, which serves the Sarasota and Manatee county areas, donated nearly 1,500 pounds of food to the Harry Chapin food bank, Lt. Greg Bueno told Patch.
