Tropical Storm Nicole: Transit Services Paused, Schools Closed

With Tropical Storm Nicole hitting FL, Sarasota County schools have closed, transit services and Hurricane Ian debris pick-up paused.

SARASOTA, FL — With Tropical Storm Nicole hitting Florida, the following services, events and programs have been affected in Sarasota County:

  • Sarasota County Transit services will be closed on Thursday. Sarasota County Transit bus, SCATPlus, OnDemand and the Siesta Key Breeze trolley services will resume normal operations on Friday.
  • The Bay Runner isn’t operating on Thursday.
  • Frances T. Bourne Jacaranda Public Library closed because of a power outage on Thursday and will remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.
  • Sarasota County, and the cities of Sarasota and North Port Hurricane Ian debris collection operations and public drop-off sites will remain closed through Thursday. Weather permitting, these operations will resume on Friday.
  • Garbage, recycling and yard waste pickup for unincorporated Sarasota County and in the city of Sarasota will continue as scheduled.
  • Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources is canceling outdoor and athletic field reservations through Thursday.
  • Sarasota County Government offices will be open normal business hours Thursday.
  • Sarasota County Schools will be closed on Thursday and resume normal operations on Friday.
  • Lido Pool will be closed Thursday.
  • Fire Station 23 ground-breaking ceremony scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m. has been canceled.
  • FEMA Disaster Recovery Center at Shannon Staub Library will be closed Wednesday through Friday.
  • The city of Sarasota’s Free WiFi in the Parks pilot program kick-off ceremony set for Thursday has been rescheduled for Tuesday, 10 a.m., at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park.
  • The SBA Business Recovery Center at the Venice Community Center at 326 Nokomis Ave. is closed through Sunday and is expected to reopen Monday at 9 a.m.
  • New College of Florida canceled all classes on Wednesday and Thursday.
  • The Veterans Day Catholic mass scheduled for Friday at Sarasota National Cemetery has been moved to the nearby St. Patrick Parish at 7900 Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota. Opening ceremonies start at 3:15 p.m. with mass beginning at 3:30 p.m.
  • All Faith Food Bank has rescheduled annual turkey distribution at the following sites: Lamarque Elementary School moves to Nov. 16, 5:30 to 7 p.m.; Ed Smith Stadium moves to Nov. 17, 4 to 6 p.m.; and Van Wezel Performing Arts Center moves to Nov. 19, 9 to 11 a.m.
