What’s Open, Closed In Sarasota After Hurricane Ian

After Hurricane Ian hit Southwest FL, here's a look at what's open and what services are available in the Sarasota area on Thursday.

SARASOTA, FL — The day after Hurricane Ian pummeled Southwest Florida — especially the Fort Myers area, where the death toll is estimated to be in the hundreds — communities are clearing debris and already focused on recovery.

In Sarasota County, crews are working to remove debris from the roads and properties following the powerful Category 4 storm.

Those in the Sarasota area might be wondering what’s open in the region — from government offices and services to local attractions and cultural institutions — or what might be opening soon.

Here’s a look at what’s open and what’s closed after Hurricane Ian’s hit to Sarasota County:

  • Sarasota County Schools will remain closed through Friday.
  • All northern Sarasota County evacuation centers, with the exception of the Phillippi Shores Elementary School center, will close Thursday at 4 p.m.
  • Water remains shut off to Siesta and Casey keys; disruptions are expected in other areas of the county.
  • Sarasota County government offices are closed Thursday.
  • Normal police services have resumed.
  • All reservations within Sarasota County’s Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources parks - at both indoor and outdoor facilities and park – are canceled through Friday.
  • All Sarasota County libraries are closed until further notice.
  • County transit buses, SCATPlus, OnDemand and the Siesta Key Breeze Trolley aren’t operating Thursday.
  • Solid waste collection services in Sarasota County have been cancelled Thursday.
  • The Central County Landfill in Nokomis is closed Thursday.
  • The Citizens Convenience Center is closed Thursday.
  • The Bee Ridge Chemical Collection Center is closed through Sunday, at least.
  • The Jackson Road Chemical Collection Center is closed through Tuesday, at least.
  • City of Sarasota offices are closed Thursday and Friday and will reopen Monday at 8 a.m.
  • John Ringling Causeway and Siesta Bridge have reopened.
  • Boil water notice in effect on barrier islands until Saturday afternoon.
  • The Ringling Museum is closed until further notice.
  • Both the downtown Sarasota and Historic Spanish Point campuses of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens will remain closed until they are able to reopen to the public.
  • Sarasota Jungle Gardens remains closed as it assesses its storm damage and safety of the animals.
  • Sarasota Art Museum is closed until further notice.
