After Standoff, Police Arrest Suspect

St. Petersburg Police have arrested Jeffrey Simpson, 48, after a standoff with SWAT team members outside the home of Simpson's brother at 526 Villagrande Ave. S. 

According to police, David Simpson called police around 6 a.m. Wednesday morning to report that his brother was armed and outside his front door demanding entry to the home.

During the 911 call, a single gunshot was heard. According to police, Jeffrey Simpson had fired into the ground. 

Officers, according to the police report, arrived on the scene and found Jeffrey Simpson standing on the front porch of the home armed with a 22 cal. semi-automatic handgun.

At that point, police said Simpson pointed the gun to his head and threatened suicide numerous times and refused to put the gun down. Officers managed to evacuate David Simpson and his family from inside the home while negotiators continued their dialog with Jeffrey Simpson.

Eventually SWAT team members were deployed and at about 8:45 a.m. Jeffrey agreed to put the gun down and was taken into custody without incident.

Jeffrey Simpson, who is on felony probation, was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and aggravated assault. He was transported to the Pinellas County Jail. Investigators are still attempting to determine where Simpson obtained the gun found in his possession, police said.
