Bomb Threats Made At Several Historically Black Colleges in FL

Several historically Black colleges in Florida began receiving bomb threats Monday, just as Black History Month gets underway.

FLORIDA — Within the last 24 hours, multiple historically Black colleges and universities in the United States, including two in Florida, have become the target of bomb threats. At least a dozen HBCUs nationwide have received them as of Tuesday morning, multiple reports confirm.

Edward Waters University in Jacksonville is the latest HBCU target. The university confirmed it received a bomb threat Tuesday morning. The threat prompted the school to cancel all in-person activities, classes and university operations.

"The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has been notified and is on campus investigating this matter," the university posted in a message to Facebook.

Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach was also placed on lockdown after it received a bomb threat Monday morning. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office and the Daytona Police Department responded to the threat and searched the school before giving the all-clear.

"B-CU, like several other HBCUs was targeted in a series of threats made across the country, prompting a lockdown status that lasted until late afternoon," the university said in a statement. "We are grateful for the rapid response of the Daytona Police Department and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. And we commend our students for showing maturity in understanding the seriousness of the issue and complying with the sheltering in place."

Bomb threats made at other HBCU campuses across the country include at Kentucky State University, Edward Waters University in Jacksonville, Morgan State University, Xavier University of Louisiana, Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi and Jackson State University in Mississippi, USA Today reported.

The HBCU bomb threats come at the start of Black History Month.
