A Tuesday morning fire in St. Petersburg claimed the life of a 5-year-old boy.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — As St. Petersburg authorities continue to investigate a Tuesday residential fire that claimed the life of a 5-year-old boy, some details have been released.

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the fire at a home in the 2700 block of Sixth Street South broke out around 11:30 a.m. on April 11. Hassan Jerome Vann, 5, died from smoke inhalation caused by the blaze, a Wednesday email from the agency said. Hassan’s father, Robert Leon Vann; mother, Ebony Vonkisha; and 4-year-old sister Hassana Vann were able to escape the burning home, authorities noted.

“The fire started in the children’s bedroom of the home, the northeast bedroom,” the email said. “There was one smoke alarm in the home.” Authorities say that alarm, in the living room, did activate when the fire broke out.
