Car Crashes At St. Pete Bus Stop Killing Man, Injures Grandson

The grandfather suffered critical injuries and died Sunday afternoon at Bayfront Health.​

ST. PETERSBURG, FL - An 83-year-old grandfather died and his 36-year-old grandson suffered injuries Sunday when a car ran off the road and hit both men while they were sitting at a bus stop in front of Disston Plaza on 49th Street in St. Petersburg, police said.

At 12:50 p.m., driver Louise Pequeno, 78, turned right from Disston Plaza to head north on 49th Street. Investigators believe a small white or light-colored SUV swerved to avoid her but made contact with her vehicle. Pequeno then swerved and drove into the bus stop bench.

The grandfather, Santiago Carcamo, suffered critical injuries and died Sunday afternoon at Bayfront Health.The grandson, Gabriel Oliva, suffered broken bones, but he is expected to be okay.

Pequeno stopped and cooperated with the investigation. Investigators want to speak to the driver of the light-colored SUV that may have been involved. Anyone with information, call 893-7780 or text SPPD plus your tip to TIP411.
