Tuskegee University Among 10 Bands Playing At The 2022 MLK Day Parade

St. Petersburg residents and visitors can celebrate in person on Dr. MLK Day at the downtown parade honoring King's legacy.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Big Parade is back in person for 2022 featuring performances by 10 bands and more than 100 groups will participate in the parade.

The parade was virtual in 2021.

The free weekend festivities kick off Saturday, King's birthday, at the Albert Whitted Park, 480 Bayshore Dr. S.E., St. Petersburg with the Music Festival & Family Fun Day scheduled from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Local food trucks and vendors will also be there.

Sunday's celebrations include the MLK Community Gospel Choir Showcase at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 3300 31st Street S, St. Petersburg from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Following that is the MLK Band Showcase at Campbell Park Football Complex, 601 14th St. S., St. Petersburg starting 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade starts at 11 a.m. in downtown St. Pete. According to the 2022 parade route provided by the city, it starts at First Avenue South and goes to 16th Street North and then to the Tropicana Field's lot 1 where it ends.

Tuskegee University, Booker T. Washington High School and Texas Southern University are among the 10 bands performing during a weekend event and in the parade Monday.

King is remembered for his nonviolent communication while speaking up for racial equality, his influence on the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and on the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
