Final Farewell to the St. Pete Pier

The St. Pete Pier was packed with folks who showed up for a festive goodbye. Slide the bar on the right to see images, video and tweets about the closing.

The St. Pete Pier, which bathed the dowtown waterfront in pastel lights every night, will go dark on May 31, slated to be demolished. Gone forever will be the fishing shack renting bait and tackle, the feed-the-pelicans dockside attraction, the quirky carnival-style activities that drew people 365 days a year. City officials see a more prosperous future for this property, even as some everyday folks question the closing. At least right now, the predictions seem as fuzzy as the vending-machine fortune teller beckoning Pier visitors to drop a few quarters to reveal the future.

Here's a look at recent social media coverage of the closing, including images, tweets and video.
