Woman Suffers Critical Injuries In St. Pete Head-On Collision: Cops

A St. Petersburg woman's SUV crashed head-on into a van over the weekend as she drove in the opposite direction of traffic.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A St. Petersburg woman is in critical condition after she drove the wrong direction on Interstate-275 southbound early Sunday crashed head-on with a van near 38th Avenue North, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said they are not sure from which exit the 33-year-old driver began driving in the northbound direction in the southbound lanes. Her SUV crashed into a van just north of 38th Avenue North. Both vehicles spun into the exit lane of 38th Avenue North just after 3 a.m., investigators said.

The SUV caught fire, and authorities had to close southbound lanes of I-275 until 7:13 a.m. The driver of the van experienced non-life-threatening injuries, according to detectives.
