Man Charged In Hit-And-Run Pedestrian Death In St. Pete

Danzel Rashard Hammonds, 31, has been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run death of Hollis Heatherley, a pedestrian from Clearwater.

ST. PETE, FL — Seven months after a hit-and-run crash left a pedestrian dead in St. Pete, police said they have finally arrested the driver involved.

Danzel Rashard Hammonds, 31, faces several charges including leaving the scene of a crash involving death and tampering with physical evidence.

About 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 3, 2021, police said Hollis Heatherley of Clearwater was attempting to cross 1st Avenue North in the crosswalk at 16th Street North in St. Petersburg when he was hit and killed.

Several identifiable parts from the damaged vehicle were left at the scene, police said.

Using those parts, police said they were able to identify the make and model of Hammond's car. Additional investigative work led officers to a Scion FR-S registered to Hammonds.
