Speeding Tesla Driver Thrown Into Gulf After Driving Off I-275: FHP

A passing boater rescued the Tesla driver, who drove off I-275 into the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A speeding Tesla driver was thrown into the Gulf of Mexico after losing control of his car on Interstate 275 Wednesday afternoon, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

The 25-year-old St. Petersburg man was heading south on the interstate when he lost control near mile marker 16, approaching the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, according to the agency.

He drove off the road, entered the shoulder, collided with a drainage pond and overturned into the mangroves.

The driver, who was unrestrained, was thrown from the car into the Gulf, where he was retrieved by a passing boater, FHP said.

The boater brought the driver to the Maximo Park boat ramp and he was brought to an area hospital with serious injuries.
