ST. PETERSBURG - A St. Petersburg man stabbed and killed an intruder who broke into his St. Petersburg apartment overnight, police said. The intruder was identified as Zachery Eggleston, 23.
About 1:30 a.m., detectives responded to an apartment on 77 Avenue N to investigate a stabbing. Investigators determined that an intruder forced his way into an apartment where a man identified as Jonathan Garcia, 29, his girlfriend and her daughter had been sleeping. The two men got involved in a fight. During the fight, Garcia stabbed the intruder, police said. Both men were taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries.
Eggleston later died at the hospital from his wounds. Both men live in the same apartment complex but the victim did not know the suspect, police said. This is still an ongoing investigation, but Garcia has not been charged.
