St. Pete Sailboat Fire Results In Serious Burns

Two people were rescued from a burning sailboat anchored off Coquina Key Tuesday morning.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A fire aboard a 25-foot sailboat anchored off Coquina Key Tuesday morning has sent one person to the hospital as a trauma alert.

According to St. Petersburg Fire Rescue, the boat was about 50 to 75 feet offshore when it went up in flames. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but officials say two people were onboard the vessel when the fire started. One of the two received first- and second-degree burns to about 15 percent of her body, an email from the agency said.

The city's Fire Boat 11 was working on putting out the flames as of 11:45 a.m. April 18.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported that the injured passenger was taken to a local hospital as a trauma alert.
