ST. PETERSBURG, FL — After emceeing the BLD Southeast in St. Petersburg in September, artist Rachel Covello was inspired by the organization’s dedication to equity and sustainability - so much that she made it the centerpiece of her upcoming art show at 5 Deuces Galleria.

“[The conference] made me aware of what we can do to create more sustainability and how I think about things,” she told Patch.

The opening reception for “The Art of After: Upcycle Art Show” at 5 Deuces Galleria, 230 21st Street S., takes place Saturday, 5 to 9 p.m., coinciding with the city’s Second Saturday Artwalk.

The show intentionally comes on the heels of the excess of the holiday season.

“The timing was specific, right after the holidays,” Covello said. “It’s the most wasteful time of the year with gift giving and wrapping and parties and all the things we throw away in the kitchen and cooking. “
