Update: Teen Who Threatened To Shoot People At FL Pride Event Arrested

WEST PALM BEACH, FL — Police said they have arrested a teen who threatened to shoot people at a weekend LGBTQ+ Pride event in West Palm Beach.

"These were hate-filled threats targeted at a 'gay event' in Palm Beach County and the West Palm Beach Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety of our residents, visitors and anyone who comes to our city," Mike Jachles, public information officer for the West Palm Beach Police Department, told WPBF-TV.

On Sunday, West Palm Beach Police Chief Rick Morris said the Miami Police Department received a report of a threatened mass shooting to occur at the "Pride on the Block 2022" event in West Palm Beach.

The threat was made on a video chat platform, Omegle. In the video, the teen, waving a gun in the video, said he lived in Palm Beach County, made anti-LGBTQ+ comments and said he was going to commit a mass shooting on that day, at that event.

The Miami Police Department notified the West Palm Beach Department and a criminal investigation was launched.

In response to the threat, the police department said it increased security with uniformed and plainclothes officers and SWAT team members at the downtown event to ensure the safety of everyone.

Detectives with the West Palm Beach Police Department Strategic Intelligence Center (STIC) were in contact with local, state, federal and international agencies to develop additional information on the suspect.

Early Monday morning, police said the 17-year-old was arrested in Canada for making the threats.

Canadian authorities have charged him with threats to commit a mass shooting. He also faces charges in Florida.
