All-Clear Given At GA University After Chemical Spill
University officials responded to a chemical spill at a campus Recreation Activity Center.

STATESBORO, GA — The all-clear has been given at Georgia Southern University after a chemical spill at its recreation center prompted an evacuation Thursday in Statesboro, according to officials.
Around noon, the university said the chemical spill at the Recreation Activity Center was cleaned and poses no risk to students. This comes after university officials requested the evacuation of the center an hour earlier.
Statesboro campus RAC update (All Clear). The chemical spill has been cleaned up; there is no risk to students. The RAC has been reopened for use. Students do not have to avoid the area or building. All classes that have already been moved remain moved.

The center has since been reopened, and officials said students are no longer required to avoid the area. Classes will stay where they were moved.

The cause of the chemical spill was not revealed.

Georgia Southern, with its main campus located at 1332 Southern Drive, also has campuses in Hinesville and Savannah.

The Statesboro campus hosts more than 17,000 students and has at least 200 on-campus clubs and organizations, according to the university.
The recreation center is where students are offered group fitness classes, aquatics and space for intramural sports. The center also features a fitness gym.
