GA Gas Tax Suspension Set To End Amid General Assembly Special Session

After being renewed twice, Gov. Brian Kemp's state of emergency expires Wednesday, resuming gas taxes in Georgia if not restored.

GEORGIA — The state of emergency, which allowed the suspension of gas taxes in Georgia, is set to expire at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

Gov. Brian Kemp renewed the order twice since September, citing inflation as the need for the state of emergency. However, if not extended, the suspension will be lifted and state taxes will be restored at the gas pumps.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Georgia gas average was $2.785 for a regular gallon, according to the gas price monitoring agency, AAA. The average is about 19 cents cheaper than a month ago, when the suspension was extended.

The state of emergency is set to end the same day as the Georgia General Assembly's scheduled special session.

Kemp called for the session in a proclamation on Oct. 26 to allow the assembly to consider congressional district maps after a federal judge ordered they be revised to better represent Black voters.

The governor noted the General Assembly is also expected to ratify the gas tax suspension and confirm appointments he has made since the assembly's March 30 regular meeting.
