Man Accused Of Shooting 2 GA Officers Dies In Jail: Reports

The 35-year-old was facing charges in connection with the shooting of two police officers who were serving a search warrant at a GA home.

COFFEE COUNTY, GA — The man accused of shooting two police officers who were executing a search warrant last week in Tifton died Monday night while at the Coffee County Jail, according to media reports.

Davy Deonte Royal, 35, died during an "isolated incident" at the jail, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, citing Coffee Coroner Brandon Musgrove.

A Douglas Now report said Royal died by suicide after being found unresponsive at the jail. He was taken to a local hospital, but life-saving measures were not successful, the report stated.

Prior to arresting Royal, Tifton Police arrived around 10:45 a.m. Friday to serve the search warrant at Royal's Lee Avenue home, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

When officers approached the home, the GBI said its officers knocked on the door and announced their presence.

Royal was then accused of shooting at them, injuring two investigators, and officers returned fire.

He then barricaded himself inside the home and surrendered hours later before being taken into custody without further incident, the GBI said.

The investigators were taken to hospitals for treatment and were reportedly in stable condition.

Royal was arrested on five counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, five counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and two counts of criminal attempt to commit murder; and, he was taken to the Coffee County Jail, the GBI said.

The incident prompted reaction from Gov. Brian Kemp and U.S. Rep. Austin Scott, who both said they were praying for the officers.
