More than a million bags of shredded cheese, including some sold by major national retailers in Georgia and other states, are part of a sweeping recall affecting 31 states and Puerto Rico, according to authorities.

The voluntary recall by Great Lakes Cheese Company of Ohio was issued due to potential metal fragments in the products, authorities said.

The recall was initiated in October but classified on Monday as a Class II recall, meaning the items “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
