Dogs Maul GA Boy, 2, While Babysitter Napped: Police

Valdosta Police say a boy left unattended for two hours wandered into a backyard and opened a kennel to let out two dogs that killed him.

VALDOSTA, GA — A 2-year-old Valdosta boy was fatally mauled by two Rottweilers while his babysitter napped for two hours over the weekend, police said.

Valdosta Police on Sunday said the fatal attack happened around 3:45 p.m. Saturday in the 3800 block of Pecan Drive. When first responders arrived, police said they found the child dead at the scene.

Police said Stacy Wheeler Cobb, 48, was operating an unlicensed home daycare at the time. Though the child was the only one there that day, police said Cobb could have as many as 10 children at her home on most days.

On Saturday, the child's mother brought her son to Cobb's home so she could watch him, police said. However, police said the child was left unattended for two hours.

Cobb told officers "she was taking a nap and thought the child was, as well," police said.

While the child was unattended, police said he was able to go into the backyard and open a kennel to let out two large Rottweilers that attacked him.

Though police did not identify the boy, a GoFundMe started by mom Adrianna Jones identified him as Kaimir Jones.

Adrianna Jones, in the fundraiser, said he was her only child and that she was working at the time of the deadly incident. She added the daycare came "highly recommended."

"Per camera footage, this situation took place hours before I even knew about it. The only reason I know something happened is because the owner usually communicates throughout the day and she hadn’t responded in about 3 hours. My intuition as a mother said get off work early and see what’s going on," Adrianna Jones wrote in the GoFundMe.

"I got off early and pulled up to 8 police at the home daycare’s location. They were already inside taking pictures and so forth. This was a heartbreaking, devastating and traumatizing scene that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I found my baby like this. Investigation is still underway. Unfortunately, I did not have any life insurance for my 2 year old son, so I am asking the community for help with raising funds for his memorial funeral. Anything will help and anything is appreciated. Thank you."

Police said Cobb was arrested on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children. She was taken to the Lowndes County Jail, police said.

Lowndes County Animal Control officers took custody of the two Rottweilers, as well as a third dog that was at the home, police said.

“This is a horrible and tragic event that should have never occurred, but because of negligence on this offender’s behalf, a mother has tragically lost a child," Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan said in a news release. "I want to express our department’s deepest sympathy to the family. No words will ever ease their pain, but our hearts go out to them during this unimaginably difficult time. I also keep our first responders in my prayers, as they continue processing their response to this tragic scene.”

The GoFundMe raised more than $16,000 of its $28,000 goal as of Monday morning.
