Court Hearing Delayed For Man Accused Of Killing Cobb Couple: Reports

The Acworth man is accused of killing a Cherokee County firefighter and his wife and stabbing a Sandy Springs police officer a day later.

ACWORTH, GA — The man accused of killing a Cherokee County firefighter and his wife in November 2021 was due in court Tuesday morning but his arraignment was delayed, according to 11Alive.

Matthew Lanz, 22, of Acworth, had a court hearing but 11Alive reported it was rescheduled due to a conflict.

Justin and Amber Hicks, a Cobb County couple, both 31, were found dead in their home with multiple gunshots, Channel 2 Action News reported at the time. Lanz was arrested in the case and faced 43 charges across two counties, the outlet reported.

According to 11Alive, those charges included two counts of malice murder, four counts of felony murder, one count of home invasion, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, one count of cruelty to children in the second degree and one count of tampering with evidence.

11Alive reported the Hicks' 2-year-old son was home at the time of the shooting and was unharmed.

Unrelated, Lanz is being accused of stabbing a Sandy Springs police officer a day after the shooting, 11Alive reported.

Justin Hicks served as a fire apparatus operator/paramedic for Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services for six years, according to the department.

Cherokee County revealed new street signs in mid-September in Holly Springs, honoring the couple and their son.

Amber Hicks' father, Mark Boggs, unveiled the signs during Blue Card Command, the department’s first live fire training exercise for a new incident command system, according to the fire department.
