Here are the top five stories in Alpharetta-Milton today:

  1. On Jul. 25, the Milton City Council adopted a new moratorium that prohibits development plans and permit applications. The city wants to "delay development until the city can codify a standard of aesthetics and uses for the types of buildings allowed in the area." Currently, city staff is working on specific regulations for the design and development of structures. (Appen Media)
  2. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney has set a hearing for 4:00 p.m. on Aug. 8 for the new state court lawsuit challenging Georgia's abortion ban. The hearing will decide whether the judge should grant a temporary restraining order blocking enforcement of the "Six-Week Ban" while the litigation proceeds. The hearing will be in Judge McBurney's eighth-floor courtroom in the downtown Atlanta courthouse and might be live-streamed on YouTube. (Daily Report Law)
  3. Karen Ellis started working as Milton City's new Finance Director on Aug. 1. Ellis has extensive knowledge of the North Fulton region and experience in managing municipal governments' finances. (Press Release Desk )
  4. U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham is challenging a subpoena that orders him to appear before the special grand jury to testify on Aug. 23. The special grand jury in Fulton County, overseen by Fulton County Superior Court judge, is investigating whether then-president Trump and others broke laws when they tried to overturn Joe Biden's win. Graham wants the challenge to the subpoena to be heard in federal court in Atlanta rather than before the Fulton County Superior Court judge. (PBS News Hour)
