Now, today's weather: Today will be partly sunny and very warm. The high will be 92 with a low of 72.

Here are the top stories today in Alpharetta-Milton:

  1. The City of Milton has chosen a new elections consultant, Lavinia White. This year will be the first one where Milton manages its own municipal election, versus being managed by Fulton County. Vernetta Nuriddin, who previously held that position, was let go earlier this week for a number of reasons. City Manager Steve Krokoff doesn't think hiring a new consultant will cause any issues with the election's timetable. White has over a decade in managing polling locations for Fulton County's elections. (Appen Media)
  2. It's going to be very hot and humid for the next several days, and citizens in our area need to be careful to avoid health problems. Those at greater risk include infants, young children, the elderly and people with other health issues such as high blood pressure. The Georgia Department of Public Health has made the following recommendations: avoid prolonged time outside, don't leave anyone in a parked vehicle, ensure your pets are protected and have plenty of cold water, and check on each other. Make sure to stay hydrated and watch the weather forecast. (WSB Atlanta)
  3. There are many open positions on the ballot for this fall's elections in Alpharetta and Georgia. This week is the qualifying one, when candidates can submit an application to be considered. Terms for Alpharetta's Mayor Jim Gilvin and Councilmen Dan Merkel, John Hipes and Jason Binder end this December. (Binder is not running for re-election.) In Milton, three council seats are open, as the terms for Paul Moore, Carol Cookerly and Rich Mohrig end in December. (Subscription : The Atlanta Journal Constitution)

  • Good news for Milton residents - City Council is lowering the City's millage rate! The current rate is 4.469 mills, and the new one will be 4.389 mills. At the City Council meeting, "Mayor Peyton Jamison remarked briefly that the city could still pay for priority projects even at the 'rollback' rate " of 4.389 mills. Property tax obligations are calculated using the property's value and the mill rate." (City of Milton, Georgia - Government via Facebook)
