John Newland Named a Hometown Hero By Athens Area Home Builders

John Newland, founder and owner of JOMA Construction, has been named a “Hometown Hero” by the Athens Area Homebuilders Association (AAHBA), according to Stephanie N. Johnson, executive officer of the association. The designation recognizes Home Builders Association of Georgia chapter members who devote time and resources to local non-profits and other organizations, as well as to their local HBAG chapter.

“I am delighted to name John Newland as our chapter’s first Hometown Hero,” said Johnson. “Not only is he on the Board of Directors for AAHBA, but he has been instrumental in bettering our community – both in leadership roles and behind the scenes. His support extends from organizations such as the Acceptance Recovery Women’s Center and Camp Twin Lakes to historic renovation and numerous building projects.”

Newland and his team at JOMA Construction have provided volunteer carpenters and resources to complete repairs for people in need through Hands on Athens’ “Day of Service” activities. They also have repaired several Habitat for Humanity homes and donated surplus building materials and tools to the Habitat ReStore. Under his leadership, JOMA Construction has worked in collaboration with Athens Land Trust to build six affordable houses. He is also active with Books for Keeps, which collects and distributes books to children to foster reading skills, and sponsors a local Little League baseball team.

“It’s an honor to be named a ‘Hometown Hero’ by the Athens Area Home Builders Association,” said Newland. “My father owned his own business and set a wonderful example for me of building relationships with customers and other business owners, and of giving back to the community. Following his example has been a lifelong goal of mine. I studied art in college, and enjoy designing homes in my free time. In fact, our current home was inspired by a sketch I made on vacation four years ago. I still draw plans for future homes I hope to build.”
