Men's Basketball: Will UGA Play Georgia Tech in the NIT?

Tech cleared its first-round hurdle on Tuesday and the Bulldogs will try to do the same Wednesday evening, with the Yellow Jackets waiting.

ATHENS, GA — The state of Georgia may have been shut out of the NCAA men's basketball tournament this year. But a Peach State showdown could be brewing in the second round of the NIT Tournament.

Tuesday night, Georgia Tech bested Indiana, 75-63, in the first round of NIT play at McCamish Pavilion.

Wednesday night, the Bulldogs will try to follow suit. The 19-14 Bulldogs will host the Belmont Bruins (22-6) at Stegeman Coliseum. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.

Should Georgia win, that would set up a second-round rematch with the Yellow Jackets.

In December, UGA beat Tech 60-43 at McCamish. If they win Wednesday, they will host the Jackets in Athens for the second round.

UGA's matchup with Belmont is also a rematch — this one of last year's NIT opening round. Georgia beat the Tennessee-based Bruins last year, 93-84.

Georgia lost to St. Mary's 77-65 in the second round of the NIT last year.

All tickets to Wednesday's game are $15 and general admission seating. They can be ordered online, by calling the Athletic Association ticket office at 1-877-542-1231 and, beginning at 5 p.m., at the Stegeman Coliseum ticket windows.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
