Report: Rep. Paul Broun Wants to Stay on House Science Committee

Broun, who said recently the earth is 9,000 years old, "wants to ensure that the United States remains a leader in innovation and development," his spokeswoman told the Athens Banner-Herald.

10th District U.S. Rep. Paul Broun should know by the end of the week if he gets to stay on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee in the coming congressional session, his spokeswoman told the Athens Banner-Herald.

Broun, who was unchallenged on the November ballot but lost thousands of votes to a write-in campaign for 19th century evolutionary scientist Charles Darwin, wants to keep his spot, spokeswoman Meredith Griffanti wrote in an email to the newspaper.

Broun told an audience earlier this year that evolution, the Big Bang theory and embryology are "lies straight from the pit of hell," which prompted the write-in challenge.

Organizers hoped that a significant vote total for Darwin would nudge House leaders to boot Broun from the science committee. Griffanti told the Banner-Herald that the answer should come by the end of this week.
