11 Killed In Thanksgiving Crashes In GA, New Data Shows

The Georgia State Patrol released new data to Patch, which showed where deadly crashes took place during the Thanksgiving travel period.

Crashes during the Thanksgiving travel period claimed the lives of 11 people in Georgia, state authorities reported Monday.

The Georgia State Patrol released new data to Patch, showing that fatality crashes took place in Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett and other counties.

The GSP responded to 498 crashes during the travel period, which began at 6 p.m. Wednesday and ended at 11:59 p.m. Sunday. Of those, 24 of them involved commercial motor vehicles, data showed.

More than 230 people were injured in crashes, and 48 of the accidents involved the driver being under the influence, authorities said.

The GSP charged 422 people with DUI and 680 people with distracted driving, they reported. At least 845 people were cited for seatbelt violations.

“The Georgia Department of Public Safety urges everyone to travel safely so they can enjoy Thanksgiving with their loved ones,” DPS Commissioner Col. William W. Hitchens III said in a news release published Monday. “Seatbelts save lives. Take a moment to make sure everyone is properly restrained.”

The GSP told Patch authorities responded to the following deadly crashes:

  • Troop E territory, Georgia State Patrol – Post 46 Monroe: investigated a two-vehicle, double-fatality crash at 2632 Fairview Road in Newton County.
  • Troop G territory, Albany Police Department: investigated a single-vehicle, single-fatality crash at Liberty Expressway near Blaylock Street in Dougherty County.
  • Troop C territory, DeKalb County Police Department: investigating a three-vehicle (CMV-involved), single-fatality crash at Interstate 285 South at Lavista Road in DeKalb County.
  • Troop C territory, Atlanta Police Department: investigated a two-vehicle, single-fatality (motorcyclist) crash at 957 Metropolitan Pkwy. in Fulton County.
  • Troop B territory, Georgia State Patrol – Post 37 Cumming: investigated a two-vehicle, single-fatality crash at Cleveland Highway at Grindle Brothers Road in Lumpkin County.
  • Troop I territory, Glynn County Police Department: investigated a single-vehicle, single-fatality (bicyclist) crash at US Highway 17 North at Glynco Parkway in Glynn County.
  • Troop C territory, Gwinnett County Police Department: investigated a four-vehicle, single-fatality crash at I-85 North at Indian Trail Lilburn Road in Gwinnett County.
  • Troop I territory, Georgia State Patrol - Post 11 Hinesville: investigating a single-vehicle, single-fatality crash at Rossville Road at GA-99 in McIntosh County.
  • Troop B territory, Georgia State Patrol – Post 7 Toccoa: worked a delayed single-fatality crash, at GA-17-Alt at Oak Valley Road in Stephens County.
  • Troop D territory, Georgia State Patrol – Post 44 Forsyth: worked a single-fatality pedestrian crash at 2650 Riverside Drive in Bibb County.
