4 Shot Near GSU, Including 2 Students: Police

Four people were injured in the shooting, police said, and one of the victims was in critical condition.

ATLANTA — Four people were wounded early Sunday — including two Georgia State University students — in a shooting near the school, according to police.

Officers responded around 5 a.m. to the area of John Wesley Dobbs Avenue and Courtland Street, authorities said. Police found one female gunshot victim at the scene in critical condition, according to law enforcement, while the other three victims — two females and one male — had already gone to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

A large crowd had been gathering prior to the shooting, police said, and an altercation occurred involving an exchange of gunfire by people who were not affiliated with the university, its president, M. Brian Blake, said in a message to the school community.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who were injured and their families,” Blake said.

The school is working with the Atlanta Police Department as the agency investigates and patrols in the area will increase, according to Blake, who noted counseling is available 24/7 at 404-413-1640 and student victim assistance is also offered for those affected by crime.
